Week 6
We sure are keeping busy this term! Not only did we have Apple Day, but we also had Sun Science Day! On Apple Day students participated in many activities. Students were given their very own apple at the start of the day. We drew portraits of our apples, weighed them, measured them, tested whether they would sink or float, predicted the number of seeds in them, dissected them, and finally ate them! We also got to try 6 varieties of apple and many different ways that apples are prepared. We even got to try two types of apple pie! The votes are in and students officially like red apples the best. Students also voted on their favorite way to prepare apples, and to my surprise, traditional sliced apples won by a landslide. I guess next time I will keep all the apple pie for myself :) Sun Science day was a blast! Astronomers from the Northwest Florida Astronomy Association were here all day to help students learn about objects in the sky. Students heard a presentation on "Our Star: The Sun" and viewed the sun through special telescopes with light filtration lenses. Visit the "Member Images" tab at www.nwfastro.org to see photographs taken by the astronomers we worked with today, using the very telescopes we got to look through!
Week 5
Wow! This was a busy week! We started off with an awesome open house where students got to share their "Guess Who?" posters, self portraits, and favorite things mobiles. We had over half the class in attendance, a great turn out! Our first progress reports came home, we learned how to take quizzes using Accelerated Reader, we learned our second vowel sound in phonics, met a new book character named "Clark the Shark," we practiced "brainstorming" using our very favorite topic (see below) and we topped it all off with making homemade ice cream in class today! This will kick off our descriptive writing unit. On Monday we will write all about our experiences by using 5 sense descriptions. Cold, wet, sticky and sweet are a few of the descriptors that come to my mind upon cleaning this afternoon! Here are some pictures below of our learning experiences this week.
We are halfway through our first term. I can't believe it!
Success in our Second Week
This week was another busy one as we worked hard to develop a stronger classroom community. Take a look at our accomplishments.
We began a unit on "writers" yesterday which will carry over into next week. Students read many sample texts on why, how and what writers write. We made lists of things we hope to write about this year, and are excited about trying our hand at writing in different locations next week (outside, in the library, on the playground, in class, etc.).
Looking forward to many more busy weeks to come. Have a safe holiday weekend everyone!
a busy first week: take a look
Welcome to first grade!
Dear students and parents,
I am so excited to meet each and every one of you. This year we will all succeed! We will deepen our knowledge and skills in the major areas of reading and writing, including phonics, grammar, fluency (reading smoothly with expression), vocabulary and comprehension (understanding and making sense of what we read). In math we will all be able to solve addition and subtraction word problems within 20, solve addition and subtraction problems within 100 using concrete models, measure length, tell time, graph data and learn about the attributes of geometric shapes. We will learn so many interesting things about the world around us and we will let our curiosity run wild! We will make lots of friends and learn to communicate with them to solve problems. We will be doing a lot of cooperative learning, which means we will be working in groups or with partners to produce creative work which we will share with the class. We will be organized and self-sufficient as we learn to be more independent in our daily routines. If you have any questions about the upcoming year or the first days of school, please send me an email at [email protected]. Please take a moment to fill in the contact info below.
Thank you,
Ms. Clark
